Role Overview

We are looking for an ambitious and technically minded individual to join us as a Control & Automation Apprentice, working towards a Level 6 Control Systems Engineer - delivered in partnership with Siemens SITRAIN, Tameside College, and the University of Salford.

This is a real engineering role from day one. You will develop hands-on skills in control systems, automation, and PLC programming while working towards a fully funded BEng (Hons) in Control and Automation and a Siemens Certified PLC Programmer accreditation. The programme has been running since September 2017 and is one of very few apprenticeships designed by employers, for employers - and delivered by one.

Over 4–5 years, you'll build expertise in some of the most in-demand areas of engineering:

  1. Control system design and integration

  2. PLC, SCADA, and HMI programming - including Siemens Certified PLC Programmer Accreditation

  3. Automation & Robotics

  4. Embedded Systems

  5. Systems modelling and simulation

  6. Safety and compliance in engineering systems

  7. Project management and stakeholder communication

On completion, you'll have a clear pathway to IEng professional status.

How the Apprenticeship Works

The programme runs over 4–5 years and combines three streams throughout:

Academic Learning - The first year is full-time study at Tameside College, transitioning to block-release from year two onwards. The full qualification pathway includes EAL EUCA practical units, a HND, and a BEng (Hons) in Control and Automation in year four, delivered in partnership with the University of Salford.

Siemens Programming Training - Three five-day TIA Portal programming courses (Levels 1, 2 & 3), plus an assessment day at the Siemens Manchester Training Centre, leading to your Siemens Certified PLC Programmer qualification (40 credits).

On the Job Training - Hands-on experience in your engineering role throughout the programme, supported by a dedicated SITRAIN skills coach who carries out regular learner reviews, provides feedback on portfolio evidence, and prepares you for End Point Assessment. You will also have access to on-demand content via the SITRAIN Access platform.

The programme is IET Approved and holds an Ofsted Good rating.

The Degree: BEng (Hons) in Control & Automation

The degree is split into three parts combining academic study and work-based learning:

University of Salford modules:

  1. Automation & Robotics - 20 credits (2-week block). Covers current industrial control technology and practices including PLC, SCADA, and DCS systems, and the ability to design a PLC-based control system.

  2. Embedded Systems - 20 credits (2-week block). Introduces embedded systems and their application to modern electronics, developing skills in microcontroller-based design and implementation.

Siemens SITRAIN:

  1. Siemens Certified PLC Programmer - 40 credits (three individual training weeks plus a one-day exam)

Work-based learning:

  1. Managed Workplace Project - 40 credits (completed in the workplace and supported by the University of Salford)
